The ancient tradition continues, two choirs, each clustered around a lectern, sing hymns from a large book with Aramaic writing.  There is a female choir, made up of girls and young women, and a male choir, made up of boys and sometimes men.  The Suryani are Syrian Orthodox Christians, a semitic people living in the area historically known as northern Mesopotamia, the Tur Abdin region, for about 5,000 years.
